WHAT IS RAD TORQUE SYSTEMS?

Our world is held together by nuts and bolts, and RAD Torque Systems manufactures “planetary” torque wrenches that keep those nuts and bolts secure. RAD Torque tools are used in a wide variety of industries, for example, our tools are used to secure the bolts on mining trucks, bolts on wind turbines, or the bolts on the wings of a plane. Our tools help ensure important things are held together.

Wherever you see a large industrial nut or bolt, a RAD Torque wrench has probably helped secure it.

WHAT DOES THE RAD NAME MEAN?

We’re RAD for a reason, but it might not be the reason you think.

The name RAD is taken from the method used to assemble the gearbox on a RAD Torque wrench known as radial planetary gear reduction. The term “radial” by definition means to be “arranged like rays or the radii of a circle; diverging in lines from a common center.” The word “planetary” further defines how the gears work in a “planetary” (circular rotation) configuration within the gear box.

RAD Torque Systems has become world-renowned due to the size and power of the gearbox, which was developed by the company’s President and Founder Dan Provost, more than 25 years ago.

The stacked planetary system in the RAD gearbox is extremely compact, allowing for up to four gear stages and a very efficient multiplication of power, packaged in a small and lightweight tool.

WHY IS A RAD TORQUE WRENCH CALLED A RAD GUN?

Some operators like to call RAD Torque wrenches “RAD Guns” because of its pistol-grip style handle. Unlike a hydraulic torque wrench which has multiple components to it, a RAD Torque wrench has a comfortable, easy-to-hold handle that makes it more ergonomic for the operator.

DOES THE SIZE OF A TORQUE WRENCH MATTER?

Yes – size does matter!

By having a smaller gearbox, RAD Torque Systems can manufacture a torque wrench that is optimized for the operator. The smaller gearbox makes the wrench lighter and more manageable in size. This is preferable when the tools are taken to remote places around the world.

IS A RAD TORQUE WRENCH POWERFUL?

A RAD Torque wrench is unique because it can produce high torque values. It does this in a compact tool, achieving a high-torque ratio. These tools are designed and manufactured for extreme torque conditions for heavy industrial applications. Currently, the largest RAD Torque wrench can torque up to 11,000 ft. lbs. (15,000 nm), however, our research and development team is working on releasing new tools that will surpass this.
