Introducing B-RAD X Shaft Retention Tools

For the first time, RAD Torque is bringing shaft retention to the B-RAD X Series. Meet the new B-RAD X 3000-C (4000-M-C) and B-RAD X 5000-C (7000-M-C) – cordless shaft retention tools engineered for the hard-to-reach, high-stakes fastening applications that have long been the domain of bulky pneumatic equipment.

Why It Matters

In heavy industry, critical fasteners are often located in confined or hard-to-reach spaces – wind turbine hubs, rail car bogies, oil and gas flanges, to name a few. Crews working these applications have relied on pneumatic shaft-retention tools because they can reach deep into confined spaces where a standard tool simply won’t fit. But pneumatics come with trade-offs such as air hoses, compressors and lubricant.

Take mining as an example. Bolting the outer rim of a haul-truck wheel means reaching past the rim without the extension blocking access – historically a job for heavy, air-tethered tools dragging hose across the pit. The same access challenge plays out in wind towers high off the ground, on locomotives in a rail yard, and inside the tight envelopes of industrial gearboxes.

The B-RAD X 3000-C and 5000-C change that equation. Operators get the same deep-reach capability in a portable, battery-powered package – no air line, no compressor, no tether – delivered by one of the world’s most trusted battery-operated torque wrench technologies. 

How They Work

At the heart of both tools is a new collet mechanism that replaces the standard square drive. The collet squeezes to retain a separate extension shaft up to 24 inches long, while the reaction arm stays at the tool’s base. That means the operator can reach into tight spaces like the outer rim of a mining wheel while maintaining a safe reaction solution.

Each tool ships with a standard square drive (1” on the 3000-C and 1.5” on the 5000-C) held in place by a collet, which can be loosened to swap the square drive for an extension shaft.
